Science calls a glacier a river of land ice that flows under its own weight. M reframes it: a single snowflake is fragile, but a snowflake meeting a thousand others becomes one of the most powerful forces on the planet. How we relate to ice matters as much as how we define it.
Out on the ice, smell and color drop away and hearing takes over. Morning ice crunches sharp and piercing; by afternoon the surface softens and the sound turns dull and muted. M says she could be blindfolded and dropped on any glacier and know where she is, and that the sound also warns her when the ice has turned dangerous.
Everyone photographs the melting terminus of a glacier, the toe, but M looks at the top. If not enough snow survives the summer to compress into new ice, the glacier has no food. The edge is supposed to melt; the real crisis is that the world's glaciers are starving from the top down.
Told that being a serious scientist means narrowing yourself and keeping the data separate from what it means for people, M argues the opposite. Science is storytelling and storytelling is science, and refusing to split them makes the work more honest, not less.
